Are Loft Beds Safe for Children?

Loft beds are a good way to make use of any available space in a bedroom, and they are especially used for children and students. A loft bed is a raised bed that has space underneath that can be used for other purposes, such as a desk, or can have sets of drawers or shelves underneath to make use of the extra space created by the raised bed, or even have the space used as a play area for the children.

However, many parents are concerned for their children sleeping in these raised beds as accidents can occur. In fact there are many children that are brought into hospital emergencies each year with
children falling off the top bunk. Many more falls occur that only have minor injuries and don't require hospital treatment. One of the main reasons why children fall from their bed is because of playing around on the bed, and not really taking any notice of how close they are playing to the edge of the bed. The loft bed on the top is not the area that is designed for use as a play area, only the underneath section is to be used for this purpose. Therefore, when purchasing a loft bed, carefully consider the age of the child to ensure they understand that the loft bed is not designed for playing on.

Rules need to be set for children using loft beds, but often falling from them is the result of children
not having regard to the rules that have been set for their benefit, so give consideration to whether your child is likely to obey your instructions about their use of the bed before you purchase it.

Generally speaking, loft beds are just as safe as an ordinary bed, especially these days as they are made with safety in mind. This was not the case many years ago. I remember, as a child I slept on one when they didn't put a priority on safety rails, as they do now, and I fell out – fortunately I didn't injure myself, but I didn't find it an amusing experience.
